“Far better is it to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checked by failure...than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in a gray twilight that knows not victory nor defeat.”
-Theodore Roosevelt

Theodore Roosevelt maybe the greatest president of the 20th century and arguably one of the greatest presidents ever. This 26th President was chosen as one of the four presidents of the United States, to be featured on Mount Rushmore, alongside Washington, Jefferson, and Lincoln. At 42, he's still the United States youngest president ever and the first American to receive the coveted Nobel Peace Prize.

In this October 28, 1912 letter from Theodore Roosevelt, addressed to Dr. Stokes, (Charles F. Stokes) who was his personal surgeon, thanking him for his willingness to testify. This is in response to an attempted assassination on Roosevelt’s life on October 14, 1928, just 14 days earlier, where Roosevelt was shot.  Roosevelt famously opened his vest to reveal his bloodstained shirt. “It takes more than that to kill a bull moose,” he announced. John Schrank had attempted to assassinate the former president, shooting him in the chest before being overtaken by onlookers. Fortunately the 50 page speech in Roosevelt’s pocket, along with his eyeglass case, saved his life. Roosevelt would speak another 90 minutes before allowing his aides to take him to a hospital. The bullet lodged itself near his ribs and would remain there for the rest of his life.  This letter is an incredible piece of American history.

At the bottom of the letter Roosevelt has signed his name, in his own hand, ‘T. Roosevelt.’ An incredible piece of history.

Next to the letter we’ve included this photo depicting Roosevelt during one of his campaign speeches and centered below both we’ve included some of the most powerful and inspiring words ever spoken by an American President.

“Far better is it to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checked by failure...than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in a gray twilight that knows not victory nor defeat.”
